Ontario Launches BetGuard: Self-Exclude From All 82 Licensed Gambling Sites in Five Minutes
Ontario has introduced the most significant player protection infrastructure in Canadian iGaming history — and it took four years after the regulated market launched to get here.
iGaming Ontario launched BetGuard on May 14, 2026, a centralised self-exclusion tool that allows players to ban themselves from all 82 provincially regulated online gambling sites in a single five-minute process. The platform is available at BetGuard.ca and represents a first-of-its-kind centralised tool for Canada’s regulated iGaming market.
For anyone struggling with problem gambling in Ontario — or anyone who simply wants to step away from online gambling — this is the most accessible and comprehensive tool the province has ever offered.
What Is BetGuard?
BetGuard is a tool that enables individuals aged 19 and older to voluntarily opt out of all Ontario regulated online gaming platforms through one online portal. By opting out through BetGuard.ca, players are prevented from accessing their existing accounts, creating new accounts, or receiving marketing communications from any regulated iGaming site in Ontario.
Before BetGuard, Ontario players who wanted to self-exclude had to contact each gambling operator individually — a process that was time-consuming, inconsistent and easy to circumvent by simply signing up with a different operator. BetGuard.ca is a player support tool that allows individuals aged 19 and over to voluntarily opt out of all regulated online gambling sites in Ontario, including that of provincial lottery operator OLG, without needing to visit individual gambling websites.
How BetGuard Works
The process takes approximately five minutes, is available in English and French, and requires government-issued identification for verification.
Step by step:
- Visit BetGuard.ca
- Verify your identity with government-issued ID
- Choose your exclusion period
- Confirm — exclusion is applied across all 82 regulated platforms immediately
Ontario residents can choose exclusion periods of six months, one year, five years, or a custom term. Users may renew or extend their exclusion period, but cannot shorten or cancel it once activated.
This is an important detail: once you activate BetGuard, it cannot be cancelled or shortened. It can only be extended. This is a deliberate design decision to prevent impulsive reversal during a vulnerable moment.
What BetGuard Covers
After registering with valid identification, users are automatically excluded from all regulated operators, including the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s Proline platform.
BetGuard prohibits operators from sending direct marketing to self-excluded individuals, with strict penalties for non-compliance. This means once you self-exclude, regulated operators cannot contact you with bonus offers, promotions or re-engagement campaigns.
More than 500 people registered for BetGuard in just two weeks into its official launch.
Why This Matters
Ontario’s regulated iGaming market has grown rapidly since launching in April 2022. The province now hosts 44 licensed operators and 76 gaming websites that generated more than $4 billion in revenue during 2025.
That scale of regulated activity creates genuine consumer protection obligations. iGaming Ontario President and CEO Joseph Hillier said the expansion of the regulated market also increases responsibility toward vulnerable players and those at risk of gambling harm. He described BetGuard as a “simple, secure and effective” tool designed specifically for the province’s digital gambling ecosystem.
The previous system — requiring individual opt-outs with each operator — was widely criticised as inadequate. iGaming Ontario ultimately plans to extend BetGuard to brick-and-mortar casinos, charitable gaming, and horse racing, describing the expansion as a matter of timing.

What About Players Outside Ontario?
BetGuard applies only to Ontario’s regulated market. Canadian players in BC, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba and Atlantic Canada do not yet have access to a comparable centralised self-exclusion system.
Alberta’s new regulated market — launching July 13, 2026 — will include a province-wide self-exclusion system at launch. Read our full coverage: Alberta Online Casino Market Launches July 13, 2026.
Players outside Ontario currently using grey-market or offshore casinos should use the responsible gambling tools available within their chosen platform. All casinos reviewed on WagerFlame include self-exclusion tools as part of our review criteria. View our reviewed casinos and reviewed sportsbooks.
